From April 4th to April 19th, MINT Gallery will be showcasing an unusual gallery of artwork featuring pieces by a range of artists from all over the country. Each piece being featured is based around their mutual love of cult films and is either inspired by or pays direct homage to a specific film.
The goal of the show is an opportunity for artists to “give something back” to all of the crazy movies that have helped form who they are aesthetically and culturally.
The show will open with a reception and viewing party on Saturday, April 4th at 8PM.
We Are Going to Eat You (whose title is derived from the sleazy tagline to the notorious 1979 Italian zombie classic, Zombie) is the brainchild of Atlanta residents, Eric Weber and Millie De Chirico. Both employees of Turner Broadcasting, the duo were instrumental in the development and launch of the late night cult movie franchise on Turner Classic Movies, TCM Underground. Launched in October 2006, TCM Underground has aired many important titles that are considered essential viewing by cult film connoisseurs – titles like Russ Meyer’s Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!, Suspiria, Blood Feast, The Honeymoon Killers, The World’s Greatest Sinner and many more (some of which had never been aired on national television before).
The collection is also inspired by two gallery showings of movie-inspired artwork called Crazy 4 Cult at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. Wanting an East Coast representation of this theme spawned the idea of We Are Going to Eat You.
The show will feature original pieces created in a variety of mediums ranging from photography and painting to needlepoint and sculpture. Contributors will include several Atlanta-based artists as well as showcase works by new and talented artists from Seattle, Los Angeles, Pennsylvania and Baltimore, Maryland.
